On May 1997, two Malaysians, M. Magendren and N. Mohandas made Malaysia proud by conquering Mount Everest the highest mountain in the world which stands at 29 000 feet above the sa level. Both Magendren and Mohandas were among the 20 skilled and energetic Malaysian Mount Everest team.
The Everest project was originally initiated by our Prime Minister Yang Amat Berhormat Dato? Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. It was with the aim to encourage Malaysians to achieve greater heights. Even though the victory came only 42 years after Mount Everest was first conquered by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing, Malaysia is the first South East Asian country to place its flag on this highest moutain. The Mount Everest team had to go through vigorous training programmes for a period of time. The climbers have over 15 years of experience in mountain climbing including climbing the Himacha Pradesh mountains, located 4,857 meters above sea level in India, Mount Cho Oyu at 8,130 meters and Mount Kamet at 7,436 meters in the Himalayas.
Even though their success came 42 years after the first team conquered Mount Everest, it was nevertheless a feat for Malaysian to be proud of. Their quest was reported ?live? daily for almost 55 days by RTM.
